Lectures

Goal

Introduction to the concept of combined production of electricity and heat, as well as steam turbines for this type of application. Specific design of turbines for industrial processes and electricity generation. Operation of components and the entire plant at off-design regimes. Diagrams of regimes for combined power generation. Turbines for special purpose, utilization of waste heat.

Outcome

On completion of this programme,it is expected that student will be able to select type of the steam turbine for combined production of power and heat (CHP), select operating parameters, perform thermodynamic calculation of backpressure turbine for combined production of power and heat in nominal and off-design mode, select organic Rankine cycle for use of waste heat.

Theoretical teaching

Introduction, Thermodynamic effects of the application of combined heat and power generation, Types of heat consumers and heat demand, Steam turbines for combined production, Operation of components at off-design regimes, Operation of power plants at off-design regimes, Diagrams of regimes of steam turbines for combined production, Steam turbines for nuclear power plants, Steam turbines for special purposes (Organic Rankine Clausius Cycle, Steam turbines for a combined gas and steam turbine plant).

Practical teaching

Development of a computer program for the calculation of a steam power plant for combined production of electricity and heat, including solutions with a condensing and counter-pressure turbine, as well as for calculation of the stage of an axial turbine at off-design.
