The bioenergy industry is undergoing rapid growth due to the policy drivers underpinning the current interest in bioenergy, such as energy security and climate change. This subject provides an overview of key topics on sustainable bioenergy production, including the main biomass systems for bioenergy generation and the wide range of bioenergy conversion and utilisation methods. This subject adopts a whole systems approach and enables students to critically appraise the sustainability of various biomass energy production routes. The module teaching and learning will comprise lectures and one site visits.
After successful completion of this course students should: 1) have the knowledge to describe and explain the ways of biomass production, as well as by methods and technologies for the conversion and utilization of biomass energy 2) know how to determine the energy value of the biomass and estimates its potential, 3) through the comprehensive reviewing critically evaluate the viability of different ways of using biomass.
1. Biomass as a renewable energy source (biomass composition, forest, agricultural and livestock production from biomass, energy crops, communal waste and industrial waste, processing of biomass) 2. Domestic and EU regulations in the field of renewable energy 3. Resources and use of renewable energy in Serbia (energy production from RES in Serbia, the possibility of increasing the use of RES) 4. Bioenergy Conversion Technologies (Thermal conversion, Thermomechanical conversion, Biochemical conversion , Chemical conversion 5. Types and construction of bio-gas plants (in households, on farms, industrial bio-gas plants, waste water treatment) 6. Economic and ecological aspects of the production of bio-gas
