Lectures

Goal

The course covers an in-depth examination of topics selected by the instructor not covered in previous wind turbine design courses. The student will be introduced to advanced wind turbine design and control topics. The goal of this course is to expand student knowledge in wind turbine design and analysis and to explore current ideas and innovations regarding turbine component design, manufacturing and optimization. Components such as rotors, blades, drivetrain, generators, inverters etc. are covered in this course.

Outcome

Students will enrich and deepen their knowledge in contemporary subjects in the field of design, development, manufacturing and operation of wind turbines.

Theoretical teaching

Advanced techniques for wind turbine blade optimization. Aerodynamics and design of vertical axis wind turbines. Smart blade concept - possibilities for use of smart materials in wind turbine design and control. Reliability and cost of energy of advanced wind turbines.

Practical teaching

Practical teaching follows the lecture content. During the course, the student develops computer models and simulation to verify the advanced concepts in wind turbine systems.
