Lectures

Goal

This course introduces analytical approaches to the modeling and analysis of manufacturing systems. Manufacturing systems, such as flow lines, often operate in an uncertain environment, for example unknown demand or random processing capacities. These stochastic elements must be studied in relation to lean management principles and the concept of robust planning. In addition, the production process is often very time-dependent, for example, due to the increase in capacity, the shape of seasonal demand, as well as the decrease in the reliability of machines over time. In order to support decision-making in such uncertain and dynamic manufacturing systems, we apply the query theory. The basic concepts of this basic theory are analyzed in detail. Several general concepts of robust planning are discussed in order to search for an optimal one. Otherwise, the analytical approximation of performance was introduced and is used to analyze the economy of production volume or the state value of flexible capacities.

Outcome

Students will learn to understand the impact of stochastic variation in manufacturing systems. After this course, students will be familiar with the theory and practice of capacity analysis of stochastic production systems. They learn to adapt and apply analytical approximations and robust planning methods in real conditions of sustainability.
