Lectures

Goal

Introduction to the engineering design basics for typical machine parts, elements and assemblies. Application of basic previously acquired knowledge and skills for the design of machine parts, elements and assemblies (computer graphics, material technology, machine elements calculations, production technology). Preparation of technical documentation. Generating fundamentals for higher levels of complex machine systems design and product development.

Outcome

At the end of this course, the student should be able to: - recognise and explain the construction of machine parts, elements and assemblies (from the aspect of material technology, manufacturing and assembly technology, and application); - to apply basic knowledge about the dominant influences on construction (static strength, dynamic durability, stiffness, load-bearing capacity, service life, reliability, technological aspects, economic aspects, user needs, market requirements) in the design of machine parts, elements and assemblies; - to create construction documentation and instructions for installation, use and maintenance.

Theoretical teaching

Recapitulation of the content of the subject Machine elements, Elaboration of the conceptual solution, Designing of gear and worm transmissions, belt and chain transmissions, Mounting of rotating parts on shafts and axles, Designing of bearing arrangements, shafts and axles, housings, screw pairs, systems for lubrication and sealing. Creation of construction documentation: assembly drawings, manufacturing drawings of typical machine elements, general view, 3D model, instructions for installation, use and maintenance, Presentation of the project.

Practical teaching

Examples of developing conceptual solutions, Examples of designing multiple variant solutions of typical machine elements and assemblies, Creating simple assembly drawings, manufacturing drawings of typical machine elements, and examples of showing a general view of the structure with instructions for installation, use and maintenance. Realization of practical tasks is done by applying acquired skills in using software packages for 2D drawing and 3D modelling chosen by the student.

Attendance requirement

No special requirements for attending classes.

Resources

Suggested literature includes the necessary material for lectures and individual students' work. Required additional material (handouts and design instructions) is given in the e-form. Lectures and exercises are carried out using a blackboard and/or video. Samples of machine elements and assemblies are available in the Laboratory of Machine Elements at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
